Underwriters Laboratories has released a “Standard for Determination of Sharpness of Edges of Electrical Equipment,” U.L. 1439. This standard calls for the use of the Sharp Edge Tester in order to provide an objective and uniform test method for determining compliance with an existing safety requirement.
Most U.L. standards covering consumer products contain a subjective requirement such as “an edge, projection, or corner of an enclosure, opening, frame, guard, knob, handle, or the like, shall be smooth, well rounded, and not sufficiently sharp to constitute a hazard.”
Based on recent publications, it is evident that the sharpness of edges on consumer products is important to many government agencies like the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Bureau of Standards. Comment from the industry — where thousands of Sharp Edge Testers are in use — favor the general design concepts of this U.L. chosen Sharp Edge Tester over all others.
How to use:
Product Safety Testing Has Never Been This Easy
1. Slide the Tape Cap all the way on to the pressure head of the Sharp Edge Tester with the black center guide line and the uncovered portion
of the red plastic cap facing up.
2. Position the tape covered pressure head on the edge of the item to be checked for sharpness. Holding the clam shell base in your hand,
press down on the tape covered head until the arm and the tool form a straight line.
3. Move the pressure head two inches along the edge and then back again to the starting point. Then withdraw the tool from the edge.
The total distance of engagement between the edge and the tape-covered head is therefore 4 inches.
4. Examine the tape cap to determine whether or not penetration has occurred through the two-sensing layers. If penetration has occurred,
the black indicating tape will be visible through the resulting cut. The application of the Sharp Edge Tester to an edge with acceptable
sharpness will not result in the cutting through the two outer layers of the sensing tape.
The Tape Cap Kit Model TC-3™ complies with UL Standard 1439. It contains 44 handmade tape caps per box. The tape simulates the layers of skin on a finger. Each tape cap is designed to test for sharp edges and contains 3 preassembled tape layers and a center guideline on a plastic cap.
The tape cap slips on the pressure head of the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ for easy testing. The Tape Cap meets the UL Standard 1439 requirement of three tapes:
- 1 layer of Foam Black Tape
- 1 layer of Foam White Tape
- 1 layer of Teflon® Tape
The Tape Cap also features a 1/16” wide guideline, which is on the center of the cap and helps the inspector performing the test to “center” the tape and the tool on the edge being tested.
Use of a three layered Tape Cap is the most efficient way for the inspector to easily and rapidly conduct multiple tests on the production line without having to install three different layers of tape on the tool prior to testing each individual item. Each time a test is performed with the Tape Cap, a cut Tape Cap can be quickly identified, removed, and replaced within seconds, thus enabling more tests in less time to facilitate inspection reports.
The Tape Cap Kit Model TC-3™, comes with 44 handmade tape caps per box. This is especially convenient if the one tape cap that comes with the tester is cut during edge sharpness testing. That cut cap should be examined and discarded. These tape caps can be inserted and removed quickly from the head of the tester and are convenient on assembly line testing.
The Tape Cap Kit Model TC-3™ Tape Caps are custom made for the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™. Our tape caps fit precisely, unlike other manufacturers’ tape caps that may be too small and throw off the calibration.
Our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ complies with Underwriters Laboratories U.L. Standard 1439 for “Determination of Sharpness of Edges”.

If you have a new product that you plan to submit to Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for approval, you must use a sharp edge tester to test the edges. Your product will not be approved by UL without doing so.
Everything from appliances to electronics to metal fabricated parts, etc., has the potential to be dangerous if its rough edges are not tested for sharpness. Our Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ complies with Underwriters Laboratories U.L. Standard 1439 for “Determination of Sharpness of Edges”.
The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™, partnered with our Tape Cap Kit Model TC-3™, (specifically made to be used with the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™) is extremely easy to use. When testing with the force the tester applies, a dangerously sharp edge will cut through the two outer layers of the sensing tape on the Tape Cap exposing the black layer of tape (bottom layer). This means that your product does not meet UL’s sharp edge safety testing standards. If you do not cut through to the first layer of beige Teflon tape, then your edge meets the UL Standard 1439 and is acceptable for consumer use.
Used according to directions our uniquely engineered tester provides the proper pressure for this sensitive test. Run the tester
2 inches along the edge of a manufactured item and then back 2 inches to its starting position, without the removal of the tester from the edge, and it will provide a PASS/FAIL test of the object’s safety for general use. The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ works with specially constructed tape caps (simulating the skin on a finger) that fit onto the pressure head of the tester. When the tester is run along an edge, the tape cap will either remain intact (pass) or slit open where third layer of foam (black bottom layer) is visible (fail).
The Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™ cannot test all materials because the tool is designed to exert a specified amount of pressure on the item in order to provide an accurate determination. Items that cannot withstand that pressure cannot be tested by the Sharp Edge Tester Model SET-50™.
